Testing the iPhone 4 Connectivity

There is no doubt in saying that iPhone 4 is getting extremely popular now-a-days due to its excellent features. However, the iPhone connectivity is not so appreciated. From the day it has been introduced in the market, there is controversy regarding the iPhone 4 antennas. Studies and reviews have concluded that the iPhone 4 connectivity is not as effective as the connectivity performance of the iPhone 3Gs. Some tests were done to prove this. In this the iPhone 3G was pitted against iPhone 4 to test the connectivity and data throughput performance. However, I conducted this test and as I do not have much knowledge on measuring bandwidth over 3G networks, still I have brain to determine when the connectivity is better or not proper. So, if you have some accurate tools you can determine the performance your iPhone 4 by putting some time and effort.

When iPhone 4 was launched in the market, the company told about the new antenna design and proclaimed that the phone would should better connectivity and improve the wireless reception. The metal band at the outer edges of phone serves as an antenna. The inner side of the phone consists of wireless antennas for better iPhone 4 connectivity.

However, if you compare iPhone 4 connectivity with the previous models, it is far better and faster. We had compared iPhone 4 connectivity with the previous model iPhone 3Gs. We compared and measured the voice-call quality and network connection speeds of these two phones. We tested both the phones at same time and at same location. However, only difference was in their antennas and the 3G radios in both the devices.

We created three test conditions:

1. The location had a very fine 3G reception and that too proper under the AT&T tower.

2. Another location with very feeble signal.

3. This location had a moderate signal reception. Mostly such reception you see near your office or home.

There is no doubt that the output would be affected due to many other conditions. Still I did 10 test measurements for both the phones at every 2 minute interval and at every location. I took the help from SpeedTest.net to upload iPhone 4 performance and to measure the download. In all these situations both the phones were enclosed in a case, kept on flat surface and pointed in the same direction. However, we had disabled the WiFi connectivity in both the phones.

In the end we observed that iPhone 4 connectivity failed in two rounds out of three in the competition. But it was seen that the scenarios where it failed were the mountain regions where we rarely find any cell tower. So, it was accepted as the hill areas are already low signal regions. Therefore, it was concluded that the poor performance is possibly due to the antenna because in every test the signal proximity was increased. Overall, iPhone 4 performed better and has good connectivity. So, it is worth to buy an iPhone and enjoy its features.
